Quarries are the least glamorous and most reliable employers in South African heavy haulage. Every road, every slab, every concrete structure begins as crushed stone, and the trucks that move it run whether the economy is booming or merely ticking over.

Quarry truck driving covers two related jobs — moving blasted rock from the face to the crusher inside the quarry, and hauling finished aggregate out to concrete plants, asphalt plants and construction sites. This guide covers both, what they pay, the licensing and medical requirements, and the safety realities specific to quarry work.

What Quarry Haulage Involves

A quarry operates as a small mine. Rock is drilled and blasted from the face, loaded by excavator or front-end loader into haul trucks or articulated dump trucks, and carried to the primary crusher. From there it is screened into product sizes and stockpiled.

The internal haulage cycle is short, repetitive and continuous — often a few hundred metres from face to crusher, run dozens of times a shift on unmade roads.

The outbound haulage side moves finished product on public roads in tippers, side-tippers and interlinks to customers who may be twenty minutes or five hours away.

Most quarry operators run both, and some drivers do both.

South Africa’s aggregate sector supplies SANRAL road programmes, provincial and municipal infrastructure, and private construction. Major construction groups including WBHO, Raubex, Aveng, Stefanutti Stocks and Murray & Roberts are the ultimate customers, and several operate their own quarries and materials divisions.

Quarries Are Legally Mines

This surprises many applicants and it matters practically.

Quarries in South Africa fall under mining legislation, which means the Mine Health and Safety Act applies. Anyone working on a quarry site must hold a valid certificate of fitness — the red ticket — issued after an occupational medical examination covering vision, hearing, lung function, blood pressure and general fitness.

It expires and must be renewed. It can disqualify you outright. Get the medical done before investing in training, because it is the cheapest way to discover whether this work is open to you.

Operator training for internal haulage follows unit standards aligned to the Mining Qualifications Authority, and is generally machine-specific. Site induction is separate, mandatory and repeated at every new site.

For outbound road haulage you additionally need a road licence in the appropriate code and a Professional Driving Permit, category G for goods.

Licence Codes

Code C1 — rigids 3,500 kg to 16,000 kg, smaller tippers.

Code C — rigids above 16,000 kg, standard tippers.

Code EC1 — a C1 vehicle plus trailer over 750 kg.

Code EC — a Code C vehicle plus trailer, covering side-tipper interlinks used for bulk aggregate.

The PrDP sits on top of whichever code you hold. It requires a valid licence and a medical certificate confirming professional driving fitness, and must be renewed before expiry — driving on a lapsed permit is an offence.

Salary Structure

Indicative market ranges for South African quarry operations.

Role Monthly Range (ZAR) Notes
Trainee operator R9,000 – R13,000 Supervised, building hours
ADT operator (internal haulage) R13,000 – R20,000 Articulated dump trucks
Rigid haul truck operator R14,000 – R21,000 Face to crusher
Outbound tipper driver (Code C) R13,000 – R20,000 Product delivery
Side-tipper interlink (Code EC) R17,000 – R26,000 Bulk aggregate haulage
Front-end loader operator R14,000 – R22,000 Loading and stockpile work
Weighbridge and dispatch clerk R12,000 – R18,000 Documentation and load control
Quarry supervisor R25,000 – R38,000 Production and safety responsibility

Outbound road haulage falls under the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry, whose determination effective 1 March 2025 sets binding minimums of approximately R14,650 monthly for heavy and extra-heavy vehicles, around R17,379 for ultra-heavy and around R21,257 for abnormal load work.

For comparison, the national minimum wage rose to R30.23 per hour with effect from 1 March 2026, up 5.0% from R28.79 — roughly R5,894 monthly on a 45-hour week.

Outbound work is often paid on a load or trip basis. It can pay well when demand is steady, but understand the terms before accepting: how loads are counted, what happens when a customer site closes for rain, who absorbs queueing time at a busy weighbridge, and whether a guaranteed minimum applies.

Skills That Matter

Skill Why It Matters
Rough terrain driving Quarry haul roads are unmade and change daily
Tipping ground assessment Firm and level, always — rollover is the leading risk
Load distribution Uneven loading destabilises the vehicle when tipping
Blast area awareness Quarries blast on schedule; clearance rules are absolute
Cycle discipline Loads per shift is how internal haulage output is measured
Tyre and suspension awareness Sharp rock destroys tyres and suspension fast
Dust and visibility management Quarry dust cuts visibility sharply
Load covering for road work Aggregate spillage on public roads brings penalties

Safety in a Quarry

Quarry work has a distinct hazard profile worth knowing before you start.

Blasting. Quarries blast on a schedule. Clearance procedures, warning sirens and exclusion zones are absolute, and there is no discretion in them. Learn the site’s blast signals during induction, not afterwards.

Face and edge collapse. Working near a quarry face or a stockpile edge carries collapse risk. Reversing to a tip edge requires a spotter, always.

Tipping rollover. Raising a tipper body raises the centre of gravity dramatically. Uneven ground, a cross-slope, or material sticking on one side rolls trucks that felt stable seconds earlier.

Overhead lines. A raised tipper body can arc to a power line without touching it. Check before raising, every time.

Dust. Silica dust from crushed rock is a genuine long-term respiratory hazard, which is why lung function is part of the periodic medical and why respiratory protection is issued. Use it — the damage is cumulative and irreversible.

Mobile plant interaction. Excavators, loaders, dozers and haul trucks share tight space. Right-of-way rules and radio discipline exist because collisions in a quarry involve very large machines.

The Mine Health and Safety Act gives you the right to refuse dangerous work where you have reasonable justification to believe it poses serious danger, and protects you from being penalised for exercising it. Elected health and safety representatives are the route for raising concerns.

Your Rights and Protections

The Basic Conditions of Employment Act sets the baseline — overtime at one and a half times the ordinary rate on weekdays and double time on Sundays, with prescribed hours, rest and leave, subject to any collective agreement.

UIF takes 1% from you with a matching 1% from the employer, giving unemployment, illness, maternity and dependant benefits.

COIDA covers work-related injury and disease through an employer-funded levy. In quarrying, occupational disease claims for hearing loss and respiratory conditions matter as much as injury claims, which makes your periodic medical a health record as well as a compliance requirement.

Personal protective equipment — hard hat, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, eye and hearing protection, respiratory protection — is supplied by the employer at no cost to you. It is never a legitimate payroll deduction.

Money and Financial Planning

An indicative plan for a quarry driver earning R17,000:

Item Monthly (ZAR)
Rent and utilities 4,400
Food and household 3,300
Transport 1,500
Family support 3,500
Savings and investment 2,500
Insurance 1,200
Buffer 600

Quarry demand follows construction cycles, so a cash buffer matters. Trip-rate drivers in particular should budget on a slow month rather than a good one.

Confirm the employer’s insurance position and consider personal accident and life cover — Old Mutual, Sanlam, Discovery, Santam and OUTsurance offer relevant products. Disability cover deserves particular thought, because a failed medical ends this work immediately.

Formal payslips build the credit history a lender assesses for a vehicle loan, personal loan or home loan. Real estate in the towns serving quarry and construction regions is genuinely reachable on this income, and a bond outlasts the working years.

Where the Work Is

Quarries operate near every major population centre because aggregate is expensive to transport far. Gauteng has the densest concentration, serving the largest construction market. KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the North West and the Free State all support quarry operations tied to regional construction and road programmes.

That geographic spread is an advantage — quarry work is available in more places than long-haul freight or deep-level mining.

How to Apply

Approach quarry operators, aggregate suppliers, ready-mix concrete companies and construction materials divisions directly. Many quarries are run by construction groups or dedicated materials companies, and they hire when contracts start.

Plant hire firms and bulk hauliers supply drivers to quarries on contract and recruit frequently.

PNet, Careers24, Indeed South Africa and Job Mail carry listings, though local application at the quarry gate is often more effective. The MQA supports learnerships and skills programmes, and CETA covers construction sector training.

Prepare a CV listing your certificate of fitness status, machine-specific certifications with recorded hours, licence code, PrDP and contactable references.

Avoiding Recruitment Fraud

No legitimate quarry or contractor charges an applicant for a job. Demands for registration fees, medical fees, red ticket charges, induction fees or PPE deposits are the defining marker of fraud.

Two specific cautions. Training providers promising guaranteed placement after a paid operator course are a persistent problem — accredited training does not include a job guarantee. And anyone offering to arrange a certificate of fitness without a genuine occupational medical is selling a fraudulent document that will end your career the moment it is checked.

Warning signs: an offer letter before any interview; a recruiter contactable only by WhatsApp with no verifiable company registration; requests for original documents; instructions to pay into a personal account; and salaries far above the ranges here.

Never surrender originals. Report fraud to the South African Police Service, and labour complaints to the Department of Employment and Labour or the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a red ticket to work at a quarry?
Yes. Quarries fall under mining legislation, so a valid certificate of fitness under the Mine Health and Safety Act is required for anyone working on site.

Do I need a road licence for internal quarry haulage?
Not strictly for machines that never leave the site, though employers often require one. Outbound road haulage requires the appropriate code plus a PrDP.

What is the main safety risk?
Tipping rollover, followed by blast area procedures, edge collapse and mobile plant interaction. Silica dust is the main long-term health risk.

Is quarry work steady?
It follows construction cycles, so it quickens and slows. Quarries exist near every major centre, which makes work easier to find locally than in deep-level mining.

Can I move from quarry work to mining?
Yes, and it is a common path. The certificate of fitness and MQA-aligned certification transfer, and quarry haulage hours count as relevant experience.

Who pays for PPE?
The employer. Protective equipment is never a legitimate payroll deduction.

Conclusion

Quarry truck driving is dependable heavy vehicle work available in almost every province, and it sits at a useful junction — the certificate of fitness and MQA certification open the door to mining, while the road licence and PrDP open the door to general freight.

Take the medical first. Get properly certified through an accredited provider. Learn the tipping discipline — firm level ground, no overhead lines, spotter at the edge, body down before moving — because that judgement is what makes the difference in this trade. Use the respiratory protection, because silica exposure is cumulative and irreversible.

Then treat the income deliberately: a buffer for the cyclical gaps, disability cover against a failed medical, and a documented salary that builds toward property.
